Weldon Langat and Immaculate
Anyango are the winners of the Discovery Cross Country competition after
winning the men's and women's competitions at the Eldoret Sports Club, Eldoret,
on Sunday.
Bravin Kiprop (30:38.1), a local
athlete from Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, and 10-kilometer record holder
Rhonex Kipruto were beaten by Lang'at, who trains there, in the men's race
(30:38.1).
The underdog Anyango, who trains
in Iten, had a magnificent race to beat the favorites in the women's race,
winning in 27:49.4. Catherine Reline and Christine Njoki came in second and
third, respectively, with times of 28:02.3 and 28:02.3, respectively.
The young Njoki, who had been in
the lead for much the whole race, was let down by a misfortune fall in the
final lap, which allowed Anyango and Reline to close the gap and pass her.
Kevin Kiprop (25:05.5) won the 8km
Under-20 men's title, while Maurine Jepkoech from Nandi County took the 6km
Under-20 women's crown in 21:19.0.
The Great Rift Cross Country was
the original name of Discovery Cross Country, which debuted in 1992.
