A woman accused of murdering her child caused a stir outside the Machakos law courts on Tuesday when she began to bleat like a goat.
Mary Mukulu Mbithi, from Mbee village in Kathiani subcounty, had attended a mention of her case where she was due to testify.
However, before the case began, she started bleating, causing a big crowd to gather outside the court.
The bizarre incident attracted many onlookers who were passing by the court, and they said they had never seen anything like it.
Judge Margaret Muigai went on to issue a warrant of arrest for the suspect as she had not shown up in court.
Later in the afternoon, the judge lifted the warrant after learning about the woman’s plight.
Mary's husband appeared in court and asked for leniency to take the woman to the hospital, explaining that she suffered from a mental problem.
According to the case file, Mary strangled her daughter to death on January 20th, 2022.
She had been out on a personal bond of KES 500,000. The case was rescheduled to April 27, 2023.
The incident has raised concerns about mental health in the justice system, particularly for those accused of crimes.
It also highlights the need for more mental health support for both suspects and their families.
