Jalang’o, shares why he dumped Odinga for Ruto

Felix Odiquor, popularly known as Jalang’o, a Kenyan media personality and Lang’ata lawmaker, has announced his aspiration to become the President of Kenya.

Jalang’o made the revelation during an online interview where he also explained his decision to abandon Raila Odinga, the leader of Azimio party and founder of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), for William Ruto, the current President of Kenya.

Jalang’o revealed that he went to Ruto seeking advice on how to win elections, citing the President's record of never losing an election.

He explained that he is now picking up useful tips from Ruto with the aim of becoming the first person from his community to become the President of Kenya, adding that he wants to be remembered as "that young man from Gem constituency who became the President of Kenya."

However, Jalang’o’s decision to ditch Odinga for Ruto has cost him his status within ODM, as he has been barred from the political outfit’s meetings and rallies.

Odinga has been the de facto leader of the Luo community for the past three decades, and Jalang’o's declaration to contest for the presidency could further widen the differences between the two politicians.

President Ruto formally joined politics in 1992, going against the advice of then-President Daniel Moi, to successfully contest for the Eldoret North constituency seat on a Kenya Africa National Union (KANU) ticket.

He defeated Moi’s cousin, Reueben Chesire. In 2013, Ruto was voted in as Deputy President and was re-elected in 2017.

In the 2022 presidential elections, Ruto was elected the fifth President of the Republic of Kenya, defeating Raila Odinga by just over 200,000 votes.

Odinga had the backing of the then-sitting president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Jalang’o has also publicly announced that he will not join in on demonstrations called by Odinga.

With his new political affiliations, Jalang'o will undoubtedly be a force to reckon with in the Kenyan political scene.
